Hydrogen pipeline from the French-Belgian border to Mons and Feluy

Why is this infrastructure needed?

Many industrial companies in the cross-border region Feluy, La Louvière, Mons and Valenciennes plan to use hydrogen as fuel or raw material in order to reduce their CO₂ emissions. Accordingly, Fluxys Belgium is preparing to lay a new 50-km underground hydrogen pipeline connecting the French border to industrial sites located along the corridor Saint-Ghislain - Mons - Feluy.

For this project, we are working in close collaboration with our French counterpart GRTgaz and the industrial companies in the region. At the French border, the Fluxys hydrogen pipeline will connect to the pipeline GRTgaz plans to build in the Valenciennes region, enabling hydrogen-producing companies located on the French side to supply companies in the border region that wish to use hydrogen in their processes. This project is part of Fluxys' overall approach to help build the hydrogen and CO₂ infrastructure Belgium needs.

The hydrogen pipeline between the French border and Feluy is a key step in the implementation of the federal hydrogen strategy. Our aim is to develop the infrastructure in line with the market needs from industrial clusters and establish connections between them and neighbouring countries. In other words, we are laying the groundwork to ensure that Belgium's role as an energy hub in northwest Europe can continue long into the future by transporting the molecules of the future.

The pipeline will only be laid once all relevant permits have been obtained. Under the current schedule, work is set to begin in September 2025 and the new line should be commissioned by summer 2026.

Consultation

Landowners and operators have their own point of contact at Fluxys Belgium, from the preliminary study of the project to the restoration of their land following the construction of the line. This allows them to consult with someone who is familiar with their concerns and the features of their land from the outset.
