Fluxys c-grid, the CO₂ network operator for carbon management in Belgium

Fluxys c-grid designs, builds and operates an open-access CO₂ pipeline network in Belgium allowing industry in Northwest Europe structural access to permanent sequestration sites in the North Sea.

Let’s shape together a low-carbon energy future!

Why is CO₂ transport important for industry decarbonisation?

CO₂ transport infrastructure allows captured CO₂ from industrial emitters to reach facilities re-using CO₂ or permanent CO₂ storage sites. These carbon capture and utilisation or storage (CCUS) chains are a cornerstone of Europe's strategy for decarbonising industrial emissions:

  • Hard-to-abate industry: In, for example, the cement and lime industries, significant volumes of CO₂ are inevitably released by chemical reactions during the production process. Carbon capture is often the only way for these sectors to sustainably maintain their activity and employment.
  • Hard-to-electrify industry: Carbon capture is also the solution for industrial processes that require high temperatures and in cases where electrification is not feasible or there are no alternatives currently available.

Our ambition: create a well-interconnected CO₂ infrastructure in Belgium

  • Well-interconnected network: a CO₂ network across Belgium that is connected to CO₂ networks in neighbouring countries and to export infrastructure linked to sequestration sites in the North Sea.
  • Open-access pipeline services developed in close consultation with the market, and in full compliance with the regulation, leveraging the longstanding experience of Fluxys Group and its partners in Fluxys c-grid.
  • Phased rollout tailored to emitters’ volumes and timelines, coupled with storage readiness, and subject to supporting mechanisms for the derisking of required investments during the start-up phase of this nascent market.
  • Operational excellence thanks to Fluxys Group's longstanding expertise in the design, construction and safe operations of infrastructure.

Our CO₂ infrastructure network

With CO₂ export projects advancing in Zeebrugge and Antwerp, Fluxys c‑grid aims to offer the industry the flexibility to choose between strategic hubs for CO₂ export, while strengthening cross‑border optionality.

Our roadmap, drawn up in coordination with our partners, includes international interconnections and access to long‑term storage solutions in the North Sea, meaning that emitters can effectively meet their decarbonisation targets.

CO₂ demand and supply levels in specific clusters need to be matched. Via mutual exchanges between different interested parties (suppliers and offtakers) several promising infrastructure proposals have been launched.
