Why is carbon management important for our industry?
Some industrial sectors can reduce emissions through electrification, renewable energy and greater efficiency. However, in some industries, a share of the CO₂ emissions remain unavoidable. Carbon management provides a solution by capturing these emissions and preventing them from being released into the atmosphere, helping industry to decarbonise while maintaining economic activity and employment:
- Hard-to-abate industry: In, for example, the cement and lime industries, significant volumes of CO₂ are inevitably released by chemical reactions during the production process. Carbon capture is often the only way for these sectors to sustainably maintain their activity and employment.
- Hard-to-electrify industry: Carbon capture is also the solution for industrial processes that require high temperatures and in cases where electrification is not feasible or there are no alternatives currently available.
What is carbon management?
Carbon management encompasses the capture, transport, storage and reuse of CO₂ (CCUS). It enables industrial emitters to connect to a growing European CO₂ value chain, linking industrial clusters with transport infrastructure, storage sites and utilisation opportunities. As carbon management projects develop across Europe, dedicated CO₂ infrastructure is becoming an essential part of the transition to climate neutrality.

Our CO₂ infrastructure network
With CO₂ export projects advancing in Zeebrugge and Antwerp, Fluxys c‑grid aims to offer the industry the flexibility to choose between strategic hubs for CO₂ export, while strengthening cross‑border optionality.
Our roadmap, drawn up in coordination with our partners, includes international interconnections and access to long‑term storage solutions in the North Sea, meaning that emitters can effectively meet their decarbonisation targets.
