Antwerp@C CO₂ Export Hub

Working together to halve CO₂ emissions in Port of Antwerp by 2030

The Antwerp@C CO₂ Export Hub is an innovative and multi-modal project for the transport, liquefaction and export of CO₂. It is the world's first and largest installation of its kind. The project aims at halving CO₂ emissions in the port of Antwerp by 2030.

Air Liquide and Fluxys will develop the CO₂ liquefaction and export terminal leveraging their combined expertise.

This ambitious partnership between two leading energy companies supported by a consortium of the largest companies in the Antwerp area is building the CO₂ infrastructure helping the industrial cluster in the Port of Antwerp significantly reduce its CO₂ emissions. The CO₂ is captured, transported through the CO₂ network to the on-site liquefaction terminal and exported via vessel for offshore storage or made available for possible reuse.

Fluxys, an essential infrastructure partner

Antwerp@C CO₂ Export Hub is part of Fluxys' project approach to help build the necessary decarbonisation infrastructure across Belgium and into neighbouring countries. As neutral infrastructure player, Fluxys plays a crucial role in bringing together companies within Europe's largest energy and chemical cluster to devise common solutions and take innovative steps towards the reduction of emissions.

By taking part in this ambitous CCUS project, Fluxys is providing the capacity and network to transport, (re-)use and/or store captured CO₂, furthering its ambition for a bright energy future.

Key figures

  • Multi-modal open acces terminal for the transport, liquefaction, storage and export of CO2
  • A partnership between Fluxys and Air Liquide, supported by the A@C consortium with the largest companies in the port of Antwerp (BASF, Borealis, ExxonMobil, INEOS, Port of Antwerp and TotalEnergies).
  • Capacity of 2.8 million tonnes of CO2 annually, potentially expandable to 10 million tonnes of CO2 every year
  • 20 km of CO2 pipeline across the Antwerp harbour, in collaboration with Air Liquide and Pipelink
  • CO2 to be shipped to permanent offshore storage

CO₂ export terminal: a combined expertise

Air Liquide will provide its proprietary technology for the CO₂ liquefaction plant, which will be a first of a kind in its scale and design.

Fluxys will bring its expertise in terminalling management (cfr. LNG): ship scheduling (slots and commercial) and handling, dispatching, executing Open Seasons and the contractual-legal side of the business. Fluxys can provide multiple commercial services (e.g. transshipment, regasification, loading/unloading), each supported by relevant ICT software.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges reserved a plot of land for the terminal on a strategic location inside the port and will build new quay infrastructures for the mooring of CO₂ ships.

Key moments in the Fluxys CO₂ network

    28/05/2020
  • Antwerp@C: Halving CO₂ emissions in Port of Antwerp

The Antwerp@C project aims to keep CO₂ out of the atmosphere and so to make a significant contribution towards the climate objectives, thanks to applications for capturing and utilising or storing CO₂. On 28 May 2020, Fluxys, Port of Antwerp, Total and Air Liquide submitted EU subsidy applications for taking the project one step further.
  • 06/10/2020
  • EU supports Antwerp@C innovative CO₂ reduction project by granting CEF funding

With the support of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding from the European Union, Antwerp@C reaches a significant new milestone. This backing strengthens our ambition to reduce CO₂ emissions within the port by up to 50%.
  • 22/02/2022
  • Antwerp@C project takes a major next step towards halving CO₂ footprint

Following its 2021 feasibility study, Antwerp@C is advancing to engineering studies for a CO₂ backbone across the port and a shared liquefaction unit with storage and marine loading for cross-border shipping, co-funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the studies should result in a final investment decision.
  • 12/12/2022
  • Antwerp@C CO₂ Export Hub awarded EU funding for construction of CO₂ facilities

The EU Commission announced it will grant Air Liquide, Fluxys Belgium and Port of Antwerp-Bruges €144.6 million under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF-E) funding program, for the construction of shared CO₂ transport and export facilities on the Antwerp port platform.
  • 27/05/2025
  • Construction of CO₂ backbone started in Antwerp port by Fluxys Belgium, Pipelink and Air Liquide

Fluxys Belgium, Pipelink and Air Liquide are joining forces in 'Fluxys c-grid Antwerp,' a joint venture that will build and operate a CO₂ pipeline network in the Antwerp port area to connect industrial players to permanent underground storage solutions.
  • 24/10/2025
  • Fluxys c-grid appointed as “CO₂ Network Operator” in Flanders

On 24 October 2025, in accordance with the decree on the transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines in the Flanders Region, the Flanders Government appointed Fluxys c-grid as the operator responsible for the development and management of a CO₂ transport network in Flanders.

An ambitious and pioneering CO2 project empowered by European support

The Antwerp@C CO₂ Export Hub is the first decarbonisation hub in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. This project contributes to the Flemish, Belgian and European climate objectives and to the higher EU 2030 goals of reducing emissions to at least 55%.
