CarbonConnect: Connecting Europe to permanent CO₂ storage in the UK Southern North Sea

Unlocking cost-effective CO₂ transport and storage for Europe

CarbonConnect is an interconnected infrastructure project comprising of onshore installations at the Fluxys Zeebrugge CO₂ compression station and an offshore pipeline and connection hub in the UK Southern North Sea (UK-SNS) region. It links CO₂ captured in Northwestern Europe to permanent storage sites in the UK-SNS and aims to offer an open access, cost-effective and reliable solution for industries seeking to decarbonise efficiently.

Why is CarbonConnect needed?

The UK-SNS is an ideal location as it has significant CO₂ storage capacity potential, and these storage sites are located strategically close to North-West Europe. CarbonConnect opens up multiple storage options for European industrial emitters, fostering a competitive market and giving industries the freedom to choose the best solution for their carbon management needs.

An attractive and timely solution for European industry

CarbonConnect is actively working with multiple partners to provide a seamless cross-border CO₂ transport and storage option by the 2030s.

How it works

  • Onshore CO₂ processing:
Facilities at the Fluxys Zeebrugge CO₂ compression station, Belgium, collect CO₂ from emitters across North-West Europe through the onshore CO₂ network developed by Fluxys c-grid.
  • Sub-sea pipeline:
A trunk pipeline carries CO₂ offshore to a gathering hub location in the UK-SNS.
  • Offshore hub:
The hub connects to multiple storage reservoirs, ensuring safe, permanent CO₂ storage.
