Alpine Hydrogen Corridor
Partnership across the Alps
In 2024, FluxSwiss (part of the Fluxys Group), Transitgas, OGE, Fluxys TENP, and Snam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant step towards enhancing hydrogen infrastructure in Central Europe, particularly in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and northwestern Italy.
This partnership aims to facilitate cooperation among the parties to evaluate necessary infrastructure modifications and align timelines for the ramp-up and commissioning of hydrogen supply. The objective is to create an additional hydrogen supply source by leveraging the existing transit pipeline infrastructure.
The planned infrastructure will cross the Alps, connecting Italy to Germany via Switzerland, and facilitating hydrogen imports from North Africa. This route will enhance access to hydrogen markets, support decarbonisation goals, and diversify supply routes.
The Alpine Hydrogen Corridor
The Alpine hydrogen corridor, representing the Swiss section and a critical element of this route, will allow for direct crossing of the Alps, minimizing network length and operational costs.
Through our subsidiary FluxSwiss and corresponding participation in the Transitgas pipeline, we are investigating the possibility to repurpose one of the two parallel pipelines in northern Switzerland, and are considering the construction of a new pipeline in southern Switzerland, where there is no redundancy.
A crucial connection for the transeuropean hydrogen supply chain
Benefits of the route
- Provides a direct, cost-effective hydrogen route from Southern to Northern Europe.
- Enables Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to import hydrogen directly from the South, addressing potential supply gaps.
- Promotes market integration by fostering collaboration among nations with varying hydrogen supply and demand capacities.
- Facilitates the distribution of low-cost green hydrogen, particularly from North Africa, within Europe.
- Diversifies supply routes to Northern Europe, fostering competition and enhancing energy security, thereby improving domestic resource use, storage capabilities, and the resilience of the hydrogen network.
- Aligns with sustainable development goals, promoting cleaner energy, enhancing efficiency, and facilitating the energy transition in nations along the route.
