Green Logix - Belgium’s first direct biomethane grid injection

Lommel, 26 May 2025 — Today marks a significant milestone in Belgium’s energy transition as Green Logix officially launched the country’s first biomethane production facility directly connected to the Fluxys grid. This event represents a crucial step towards climate neutrality and highlights the potential of biomethane as a renewable energy source.

A technological and strategic breakthrough

Developed by Green Logix, the new installation boasts a production capacity equivalent to the annual consumption of 7,000 households, with plans to double this output in the future. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, the facility processes organic biological waste indoors and employs active carbon filtration to minimize environmental impact.

Since 2008, Green Logix has been converting potato waste from the nearby Farm Frites factory into green electricity, steam, purified water, biofertilizers, and now also high-quality biomethane. This serves as a wonderful example of a circular economy and sustainable local energy production.

“Besides the installations that inject into public distribution networks, Green Logix's facility is the largest in Belgium and, with the first injection into Fluxys' high-pressure network, a first for our country. We hope that many more installations will follow,” said Andries Gryffroy, Chairman of the Board of Fluxys Belgium. “Biomethane is crucial for the transition to climate neutrality, and Green Logix has shown the courage and perseverance to make this happen.”

Overcoming obstacles with innovation

Fluxys played a pivotal role in enabling the project by constructing a new pipeline and a pressure regulation station to inject the biomethane into the Fluxys high pressure grid. Despite logistical challenges, including delayed components due to disruptions in the Suez Canal, the project was successfully commissioned as originally designed.

“Our teams developed a plan B to meet the tight timeline, and in the end, we commissioned the installation as originally designed,” said Pascal De Buck, CEO of Fluxys Belgium. “Biomethane is not only a renewable energy source—it’s a cornerstone of local energy production.”

Policy and market challenges remain

Despite the success, both speakers emphasized the need for policy support. The complex permitting process, lack of streamlined certification, and absence of demand incentives—such as mandatory biomethane blending in gas supply—remain significant hurdles for entrepreneurs.

“Large volumes of organic waste are not being valorized locally,” De Buck warned. “Without action, we risk exporting this valuable resource while our neighbors use it to meet their climate goals.”

Looking Ahead

Fluxys is actively working with distribution network operators to reduce connection costs for future producers. With Belgium’s potential to generate up to 15,000 GWh of biomethane annually—nearly 20% of current household and SME gas consumption—the path forward is clear.

“Biomethane sits at the intersection of energy and agriculture,” Gryffroy noted. “It’s time to integrate it into agricultural policy, benefiting both farmers and the environment.”
