First successful BioLNG test: a new milestone reached at the Dunkirk LNG terminal!

In June 2025, Dunkerque LNG carried out its first BioLNG loading onto a Molgas tanker. In doing so, we are contributing to the decarbonisation of heavy transport, both land and sea.

What is BioLNG?

BioLNG is biomethane in liquid form, a 100% renewable gas produced from organic waste (agricultural, industrial, household, etc.).

In France, as of 31 March 2025, more than 750 facilities will be injecting biomethane, after production and purification of biogas, into the natural gas networks. Their capacity amounts to 14.3 TWh/year, up 2% compared to the end of 2024. Biomethane, as a renewable and sovereign energy source, provides a solution through its conversion into BioLNG for the decarbonisation of maritime and road transport, and certain isolated industrial sites.

What is equivalence liquefaction?

Since 2022, European Regulation 2022/996 has allowed equivalence liquefaction in European LNG terminals without volume limitations and by optimising existing infrastructure.

Equivalence liquefaction is a system that allows LNG to be certified as BioLNG, provided that an equivalent amount of biomethane has been injected into the European network.

This mechanism ensures that there is a balance between the amount of biomethane injected into the network and the amount of BioLNG loaded at the terminal.
This system is certified according to European Union standards (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, ISCC).

What is ISCC certification?

ISCC is a certification system that guarantees, through regular audits, that the strictest standards are met. It ensures a fully transparent supply chain and verification of greenhouse gas emissions.

Proofs of Sustainability (PoS) ensure the traceability of biomethane injected into the European gas network and its conversion into BioLNG at the LNG terminal.

In April 2025, Dunkerque LNG obtained ISCC certification.
