North Sea Port, Fluxys Belgium, ArcelorMittal Belgium and Federal Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten are joining forces to develop a network of pipelines for hydrogen, CO2 and heat in the port area. This was agreed during a visit by the minister to North Sea Port on Wednesday 2 June.
This partnership between GRTgaz and Fluxys builds on the consultations conducted in France and Belgium in 2021-2022 to assess market players' hydrogen transmission needs. As such, the two gas transmission system operators have decided to launch a call for developing an open-access, cross-border network for the transmission of low-carbon hydrogen in Hainaut, more specifically between the areas of Valenciennes in France and Mons in Belgium.
GASCADE and Fluxys as long-standing partners in pipeline infrastructure join forces in two key projects for shaping the hydrogen economy in Germany: doing hydrogen and AquaDuctus. These infrastructure projects are to connect hydrogen demand centres with onshore and offshore hydrogen production, making a major contribution to Germany’s decarbonisation efforts.

In June 2022, French and Belgian energy infrastructure operators GRTgaz and Fluxys Belgium launched a market call for developing the first open-access, cross-border hydrogen transmission network between France and Belgium, in the Hainaut region. 17 companies expressed an interest in connecting their production or consumption site to the proposed transmission network, for production capacity ranging from 300 to 600 MW and an associated hydrogen consumption of between 1.5 and 3 TWh/year, depending on the options considered. A feasibility study will now be launched.
Infrastructure operator Fluxys Belgium has given the go-ahead for the construction of a new pipeline between Desteldonk and Opwijk. This pipeline will initially increase security of supply for Belgium and neighbouring countries in the context of modified gas flows. It is also an important step in achieving Fluxys' ambitions in terms of energy transition. It is the first strategic investment for hydrogen transport in Belgium. In short, this is a dual-purpose pipeline.
A powerful consortium of four Belgian industrial players – Prefer, Fluxys Belgium, Lhoist and Orbix – have joined forces to help decarbonise Belgian industry and provide a sustainable solution for the construction sector. They have now been selected by an European innovation fund (Innovation Fund Small Scale) and will receive a €4.5 million grant. Although there is still another administrative step to complete by March 2023, this announcement is wonderful news for the project, as it crystallises the work of the consortium and gives it the boost it needs to successfully carry out the project.
The EU Commission announced it will grant Air Liquide, Fluxys Belgium and Port of Antwerp-Bruges €144.6 million under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF-E) funding program. The funding is earmarked for the construction of shared CO₂ transport and export facilities on the Antwerp port platform. The grant award is a major step towards the final investment decision, expected in 2023.
GASCADE and Fluxys have applied to the European Commission for Project of Common Interest (PCI) status for the AquaDuctus project, marking a major step forward in their plans for an offshore pipeline for green hydrogen in the North Sea. The move by the two infrastructure operators highlights the project's importance for the hydrogen ramp-up.
On 8 December 2022 the EU Commission has announced it will grant Fluxys Belgium, North Sea Port and ArcelorMittal Belgium €9,6 million under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF-E) funding program. The funding is earmarked for the study of the Ghent Carbon Hub project, an open-access multi modal CO₂ storage and liquefaction terminal in North Sea Port combined with a CO₂ pipeline network connecting the Walloon region to the hub in Ghent.
The Open Season for additional regasification capacity at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal has successfully been closed. During the binding window of the Open Season, the full 6 million tonnes per year (or c. 10.5 GWh/h) capacity on offer has been subscribed.
With a view to offering storage users the possibility to book long term redesigned storage services as well as additional flexibility as from 1 April 2022, Fluxys Belgium is organizing a subscription window. It is the first storage service sales under the new commercial model.
The first site in Wallonia for the injection of biomethane into the gas network is now operational. This is a major step forward that not only contributes to Wallonia’s energy transition process, but also to the construction of a new model for the circular economy.
The Open Season for additional regasification capacity at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal has been successful. Fluxys LNG will now take further steps in the regulatory approval process with a view to taking a final investment decision in February 2021 at the latest.
Belgian federal energy Regulator CREG has approved the tariff and LNG Services Agreement proposals for unloading slots and additional storage services at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal.
Gas infrastructure company Fluxys and institutional investor EIG Global Energy Partners (EIG) have entered into an agreement on the transfer of EIG’s minority stake in Brazilian gas transmission system operator TBG. Completion of the transfer is expected to take approximately two months. Both companies will also explore further strategic cooperation in Brazil’s gas infrastructure market. Fluxys is looking forward to become an industrial partner in TBG as it is a key energy infrastructure for Brazil and the company’s management and workforce are highly experienced.
A group of new shareholders has reached an agreement today with global investment group CDPQ to acquire its 19.85% participation in Fluxys. The new shareholders are Energy Infrastructure Partners, the leading Switzerland-based infrastructure investor focused on the global energy transition, and a consortium of Belgian institutional investors. The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
Port of Antwerp, Fluxys, and Titan LNG have celebrated the christening of a new LNG bunker barge; the FlexFueler 002. Owned by gas infrastructure group Fluxys and leading physical supplier of LNG, Titan LNG, the FlexFueler 002 makes LNG as a marine fuel widely available to vessels bunkering in the port.
