HY4Link hydrogen corridor awarded EU Project of Common Interest status

Brussels / Luxembourg / Paris – The hydrogen network operators Creos Luxembourg Hydrogen, Fluxys hydrogen and NaTran announce that HY4Link, their joint cross-border hydrogen transport infrastructure initiative, has been granted Project of Common Interest (PCI) status by the European Commission, a significant milestone in the development of the project and for the Greater Region.

HY4Link brings together the 3 partners for studying the creation of a safe and efficient network that strengthens cooperation across borders and improves access to renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. The HY4Link project aims to establish a hydrogen transport corridor linking Luxembourg, France, Belgium, and Germany, and will eventually connect with the European Hydrogen Backbone, an initiative led by a group of 33 energy infrastructure operators to develop a competitive, liquid, pan-European market for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.

PCI recognition highlights HY4Link’s strategic contribution to energy system integration, decarbonisation, and security of supply. As a PCI project, it will benefit from access to EU funding instruments, especially the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), and streamlined permitting processes.

Commenting on the decision, Laurence Zenner, Managing Director of Creos Hydrogen underlined that the decision makes HY4Link the first project in Luxembourg to receive PCI status, stating: “This decision represents a significant step for Luxembourg and the Greater Region. With HY4Link, we are laying the foundations for a cross-border hydrogen system that connects our industries and communities to the future European Hydrogen Backbone.”

Reflecting the project’s cross-border infrastructure dimension, Pascal De Buck, CEO of Fluxys hydrogen, underlined that “by studying cross border connections we are taking important steps towards a European open-access hydrogen network”.

Highlighting the French and regional perspective, Sandrine Meunier, CEO of NaTran, stressed that “the PCI label confirms the strategic relevance of HY4Link for France and its neighbours. By linking into mosaHYc and H2med, the project strengthens cross-border cooperation and promotes the efficient development of hydrogen corridors across Europe.”
