Work near our pipelines – safety considerations

Ensuring safety together

Most of the incidents involving our pipelines result from damage during work nearby. To avoid this type of damage, anyone planning such work is required by law to provide advance notification of these activities. Thanks to the notification, we can provide all the appropriate information in good time and visit the worksite before the activities get under way to discuss the project and examine together how the work can be performed safely.

Provide notification of your work

Quick and easy via web portals

You can provide notification of your work quickly and easily via the relevant web portals. In this way, any applicant can quickly find out whether there are any Fluxys pipelines where they are planning to carry out work.

Notifications at different times

  • At the start of the planning phase of the work

If we do not have any pipelines in the area where you plan to carry out work, Fluxys Belgium will not be mentioned in the email you receive from the Federal Cable and Pipeline Information Database (KLIM-CICC) or the Flemish Cable and Pipeline Information Portal (KLIP).

However, if you will be carrying out work in the immediate vicinity of Fluxys pipelines, we will send you maps showing the indicative layout of our facilities as well as details of the safety measures you must take.

  • At least 15 working days before work starts

You must again notify Fluxys Belgium of the work via the KLIM-CICC or KLIP portal at least 15 working days before it gets under way.

This is to ensure that you have the most accurate information possible if some time has elapsed between the planning stage and the work being carried out.

Following this notification, Fluxys Belgium will again send you maps showing the indicative layout of its facilities as well as details of the relevant safety measures.

  • At least 3 working days before work starts

    Contact our regional operating centre

Following this contact, one of our patrol officers will visit the site free of charge to show you the exact location of the pipeline and to go over the relevant safety measures with the site manager or the crane operator, and provide guidance on how to carry out the work.

The work can only start when the patrol officer has submitted a report confirming that Fluxys Belgium has no objection to the work being performed.

In two cases, there are shortened procedures:

  • Emergency repairs

If there is Fluxys Belgium infrastructure where you need to carry out emergency repairs, please phone the Fluxys regional operating centre.

You can start emergency repairs once you have agreed on the work method and the safety measures.

You will need to follow up within 24 hours of this notification over the phone with confirmation of the details by e-mail (infoworks@fluxys.com) or via KLIM-CICC or KLIP, ensuring that you get an acknowledgement of receipt.

  • Minor planned work

By 'minor planned work' the regulations mean work that does not require extensive excavations, such as connection, maintenance, verification, protection and location work. Deep cultivation and ploughing as well as cleaning ditches also fall into this category.

At least 18 working days before work starts: Provide notification of this work via KLIM-CICC or KLIP.

At least three working days before work starts: Contact our regional operating centre so that one of our patrol officers can visit the site free of charge.

Carry out your work

  • Don't start without Fluxys Belgium's permission

If you are planning to carry out work near a Fluxys pipeline, this can only start when one of our patrol officers has visited the worksite and submitted a report confirming that Fluxys Belgium has no objection to the work being performed. Do not start work until a Fluxys employee has visited the site and issued you with the required safety measures.

  • Follow the safety measures

Never remove the marker posts or markings put in place by the Fluxys Belgium patrol officer.

When you are in a five-metre area on either side of a pipeline, you must comply with the relevant special safety measures.

Additional safety precautions apply when working in a one-metre area on either side of a pipeline.

If you think it is necessary to deviate from the arrangements made with Fluxys while you are carrying out the work, a Fluxys patrol officer must visit the site again before you do so. Contact the Fluxys regional operating centre at least three working days before the date when you would have to deviate from the arrangements made with Fluxys.
