Natural gas transmission between the UK and continental Europe

Interconnector: Zeebrugge (BE) – Bacton (UK)

Interconnector UK operates the subsea pipeline between Zeebrugge and Bacton. The transmission pipeline is currently capable of transmitting 25.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year from Zeebrugge to Bacton and 20 billion cubic metres per year in the opposite direction.

The Interconnector system comprises compressor stations in Bacton and Zeebrugge and the 235 km pipeline. When it was commissioned in 1998, the system formed the first physical connection between the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

BBL: Balgzand (NL) – Bacton (UK)


BBL Company is responsible for building, operating and exploiting the subsea pipeline between Balgzand and Bacton. The pipeline was commissioned on 1 December 2006 and has a capacity of more than 15 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year. Fluxys has a 20% stake in the company, which is a joint venture between Gasunie (The Netherlands), Fluxys and E.ON Ruhrgas (Germany).
