Natural gas consumption in Belgium yesterday set a new a record of 1131 GWh, beating out the previous record set on 8 January 2010 by more than 5%. It was also two thirds more than consumption last Thursday, an average weekday in winter. This means that on 2 February the Fluxys grid transmitted about 15 times more energy than the Doel nuclear power station can generate in one day.
Power stations and industrial companies connected directly to the Fluxys grid accounted for 35% of total consumption. The public distribution system, which transmits gas to businesses and homes, accounted for 65% of total consumption. Since snow is expected from the West, yesterday's record may have already been broken today.
