Compensation for victims of Ghislenghien

2012-02-02

On 30 November 2011, Fluxys and the insurers announced they had reached an agreement on final compensation for private individuals. The compensation agreements with the victims were signed today and the amounts agreed were paid out.

Walter Peeraer, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO said: "Fluxys is satisfied to see come true its desire since 2004 to compensate the victims of the disaster. In consultation with the insurers, we have arranged a settlement for final compensation of the private individuals affected and now their cumbersome and lengthy proceedings have come to an end. At Fluxys both the Board, management and staff have been deeply affected by the human tragedy that took place in Ghislenghien. As a public utility we make every effort to serve the general interest and since the very first days of the accident our company has been especially concerned about the fate of the victims and their need of quick and fair compensation. Back in 2004 and 2005, Fluxys paid out a total of €2 million to cover initial requirements. Our staff also organised campaigns to express their sympathy and compassion for the victims and their families."

The initiative leading to the definitive settlement for damage suffered is in no way linked to Fluxys' appeal against the decision handed down by of the Mons Court of Appeal. The compensation paid out to the victims is final, regardless of the outcome of the legal proceedings still under way. Fluxys reserves the right to take action against the parties ultimately found to be liable for the disaster.
