New capacity to match rising consumption in Belgium
Fluxys' compressor station at Zelzate came into operation in early December 2008. The compressor station lies at a strategic crossroads on the Fluxys grid where the pipeline from Zomergem to Kallo intersects the major east/west transmission axis between the German border and Zeebrugge with its branch to the Netherlands. This strategic location means that the compressor station at Zelzate can perform a range of functions.
The new facilities provide additional capacity needed to meet the overall rise in demand for natural gas in Belgium. It also enables larger volumes to be transported to and from the underground storage facility in Loenhout.

In the future capacity for new flows from the Netherlands as well
At a later stage Fluxys will also use the facility as a new entry point for additional natural gas flows from the Dutch grid. These additional flows are expected to commence in 2010 when the new Zelzate entry point comes into operation following investment in the Dutch grid and when the planned capacity increase on the east-west axis is commissioned.
The additional flows from the Netherlands and the increase in capacity on the east-west axis again will shore up supply into the Belgian market. They will also enable greater volumes of natural gas to be traded on the Zeebrugge Hub and will further reinforce the role of the Zeebrugge area as a crossroads for international gas flows in Western Europe.
