Prohibited activities in the reserved area

Most incidents involving natural gas transmission pipelines are due to damage that has been caused during works nearby. Specific safety measures need to be taken in the immediate vicinity of a pipeline to avoid such incidents. That is why the Royal Decree of 24 January 1991 specifies, among other things, the minimum width of the reserved area where the following activities are prohibited (non-exhaustive list):

  • constructing buildings, enclosed premises, garden shelters, carports and tents;
  • storing equipment and materials;
  • altering the cross-section of the ground (e.g. excavating trenches or creating embankments or earthworks); 
  • planting trees and/or bushes (except trees and/or bushes authorised by Fluxys).

Five metres either side of the pipeline

Fluxys gives a width of 10 metres (i.e. five metres either side of the axis of the natural gas transmission facilities concerned) for the area where the activities mentioned above are prohibited.
