Preventing damage to pipelines by third parties

Requirement to provide notification of works

Most gas transmission pipeline incidents are the result of damage to the pipes during work in the area. Therefore anyone wishing to carry out work close to Fluxys pipelines has a legal obligation to inform us of this in advance. Since 2006, notifying works has been quick and simple thanks to the Federal Cable and Pipeline Information Database (CICC/KLIM) website.

Fluxys handles 60,000 work notifications each year

Fluxys replies to all work notifications. A dedicated team using an efficient document management system handles about 60,000 notifications each year, informing the party submitting the notification whether or not there is a pipeline in the vicinity of the work. If there is, we also provide them with indicative location maps of Fluxys’ pipelines along with safety instructions.

Detailed inspections

More than 60 Fluxys patrol officers, based in eight regional operating sectors, inspect the pipeline system every day. There are three ways in which they do their rounds:

  • Car patrols to take measurements, find work that has not been announced and support contractors carrying out work in the vicinity of pipelines.
  • Once a year the whole pipeline system is checked on foot.
  • Helicopter patrols to find work that has not been announced. These helicopter patrols have been stepped up since 2006.

Beacons indicating the presence of pipelines

Fluxys indicates the presence of pipelines with beacons and marker posts along the pipeline route. Late 2008 the programme to optimise these markings throughout the grid has been completed.

Providing information and raising awareness

Some work, however, is not announced and the safety instructions are not always followed. That is why Fluxys runs a range of programmes to provide information and raise awareness about how to work safely close to its infrastructure:

Tips for using search operators

Use "quotation marks" to search for a series of words or a phrase in a specific order.

Boolean operators

You can find a group of words or a phrase by using the link words AND, OR and NOT:
known as Boolean operators, these words are used to combine terms in the search field.

  • AND: All the search terms must be included in the publication. Typing in Apple AND Pear will return publications containing both the word Apple and the word Pear.

  • OR :  At least one of the search terms must be included in the publication. Typing in Apple OR Pear will return publications containing either the word Apple or the word Pear or both.

  • NOT: The term preceded by NOT must not be included in the publication. Typing in Apple NOT Pear will return publications containing the word Apple but not the word Pear.
